A good measurement is about 1/16" in from each end of the first fret (measuring from the top of the beveled fret ends). Put the two outside E strings on the guitar and, looking straight down on the top of the nut, move these strings together or apart until their spacing is correct for you.
The frets do indeed have a ping or a more percievable string-to-fret noise, than most nickel fretted basses which I have played. But not all of them. The frets do indeed otherwise sound good. By classical guitar, I imply acoustic guitar with nylon strings, a two inch wide neck, round sound hole, and a flat or nearly flat soundboard and back.

A guitar with a 27" scale will be considerably harder to play perform bends with than a Gibson Les Paul with a 24.75″ scale, for example (assuming they're both using the same gauge strings). A long scale guitar can sometimes lend itself more to flatpicking (i.e. playing with a pick)

Hi all, I just switched to using SOB pure nickel strings a few months back, and like the warmth of their tone, however I am a little disconcerted when doing fast vibratos with them, as after a second or so of wobbling the string, I can FEEL metal grit grinding on the frets.
