Using safety goggles, not safety glasses, when grinding. Well, I've been doing this for 35 years now and it finally caught up with me. I was using a cutting wheel on a surface grinder to cut of pillow block bearing off a shaft. I turned the grinder to make a cut and iron sparks bounced off a nearby mounting and right under my safety glasses.
The average DIYer won't be using a full face shield with an angle grinder, But I weal my motorcycle gloves and safety glasses at a minimum. Sometimes, if I'm using the thin disc on something pretty thick, I'll use my old motorcycle helmet. Come to think of it though, I think that helmet is probably more expensive than just buying a face shield...
